The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization that advocates for public health and the environment, just released the 2023 Dirty Dozen List. The Dirty Dozen is an annual list of the 12 fruits and vegetables that contain the highest levels of pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables.

  3. Kale, collard and mustard greens:

  8. Grapes:
Grapes are on the Dirty Dozen list because they are often treated with a variety of pesticides, which can cause a range of health problems, from headaches and nausea to cancer and reproductive harm. Even after washing, residue from these pesticides can remain on the skin and flesh of the grape, making it important to choose organic options or thoroughly wash grapes before eating them.

  12. Green beans:
Finally, green beans are a popular vegetable but are also one of the most pesticide-contaminated. Pesticides found on green beans can cause a range of health problems, including damage to the nervous system.

“One sample of non-organic green beans had acephate at a level 500 times greater than the limit set by the EPA,” said Alexis Temkin, a toxicologist at the EWG with expertise in toxic chemicals and pesticides.

2023 Takeaway:

It’s important to note that even though the Dirty Dozen list includes these fruits and vegetables, consuming them as part of a healthy diet is still crucial. Nevertheless, you can reduce pesticide exposure by choosing organic options or washing produce thoroughly whenever possible.
